challenger, ken cuccinelli. roanoke college finds mcauliffe with as much of a 15-point lead but quinnipiac poll has him leading by four points. in an e-mail sent to supporters thursday, mcauliffe made it very clear, don't get comfortable and don't sit this one out. mcauliffe wrote to his supporters, in off year elections like this when tea party voters turn out more reliably than democrats. for 45 years, the political party that controls the white house has lost our governor's race the next year. in 2009, fewer than 40% of virginia voters cast a ballot for governor, despite the fact that nearly 70% voted in the presidential election the year before. there's a lot at stake in the state of virginia, no question about it. ken cuccinelli has spent his entire career as an elected official, trying to roll back any progress on women's reproductive rights. cuccinelli's running mate for lieutenant governor, e.w. jackson, has clearly defined himself as an extremist home phone. folks, this is not an election day the country want to miss. get out and vote in virginia. joining me tonight for the "rapid

as a hard shock to the republicans who were hoping that ken cuccinelli would take the race. but his hard line positions have come under scrutiny and virginia voters seem to be rejecting them. so that combined with you have a very liberal candidate in new york, bill de blasio, will win the mayor's race there. and in new jersey you have a moderate republican who has made a point to reject some of the hard line republican positions that are sort of taking place in the national debate. i think when you look at all of that, it's probably good news for democrats and moderate republicans. but that certainly will sort of lay a marker for next year. and so i think what you'll look at at that point is how much sort of the backlash from the tea party and that sort of movement and what is going on with congress right now plays against what will happen in this election. i think it will be interesting to see. >> let's move on to this new book that is out, called double down, this washington tell-all and it claims the obama administration toyed with the idea of swapping out joe biden with hillary clint

for a heart healthy soup. .. . ken cuccinelli is running for governor of v. tuesday and is taking heavy fire. we're back with a panel. the governor's race is a big and there are several on the docket on tuesday. let's look at the latest numbers in virginia. real clear show democrat terry mcauliffe beating cuccinelli by 7.5 points. cuccinelli trails women voters by 13 points in one poll and by 24 in another. senator brown, for all the talk in the g.o.p. about learning lessons from november 2012 when it comes to single women, when it comes to hispanics, are you guys making the same mistakes again? >> i thought that ad was against me. i thought that was my ad that they were running against me. it's the blueprint they use on republicans. it's something obviously we have to try to deal within a more effective way. i look at obviously cuccinelli's race and governor christie's race. we have a purple and blue state. it looks like governor christie, the more moderate of the two who's approached things in a bipartisan problem solving manner appears he's going to win in high double digits. you have mr.
